In standard punto banco baccarat, neither the Player nor Banker hand chooses whether to take another card. The draw is decided by a fixed sequence. A player at the table chooses which side to back; the dealing rules decide what happens next.
That is different from blackjack, where the player makes decisions such as hit or stand. Baccarat’s automatic third-card procedure is one reason the table can feel quick even though the result still depends on chance.

Cards from 2 through 9 are worth their number, tens and face cards count as zero, and an ace counts as one. Add the two cards in a hand and use only the final digit. For example, 7 plus 8 makes 15, so the baccarat total is 5. A two-card 8 or 9 is a natural and normally ends the drawing sequence.
If neither hand has a natural, the Player hand draws on a total of 0 through 5 and stands on 6 or 7. That rule is applied first. If the Player stands, the Banker hand’s decision is simpler: it draws on 0 through 5 and stands on 6 or 7.
If the Player drew a third card, the Banker rule also considers the value of that card. The standard table is:
If the Player did not draw, the Banker uses the simpler 0-to-5 draw, 6-or-7 stand rule. Casino rule sheets may format the table differently, so use the specific game’s rules panel if a detail seems unfamiliar.
The drawing table tells you how the hand proceeds; it does not let a player control which card appears or predict the next result. A streak on a score display does not change the third-card rule. Nor does the automatic sequence remove the house advantage that depends on the bets and payout schedule.
TopGamb’s explainers on Banker commission and the Tie bet payout cover different parts of the game. Read the posted table rules before playing, and set a session amount you can afford to lose. A bet on Player, Banker or Tie remains a gamble, not a reliable way to make money.
If the pace makes it hard to stop between hands, step away and use a time limit or break. TopGamb’s live-casino session budget guide offers a simple way to set that boundary before the cards are dealt.
In standard punto banco, the Player draws on 0-5 and stands on 6-7. The Banker then follows a fixed rule that can depend on the Player’s third card. No strategic choice by the bettor changes that sequence.
