The main outside bets
The even-money group is the easiest to understand. Red or black, odd or even, and 1-18 or 19-36 normally pay 1:1. If you stake 10 and win, you profit 10. The bet covers 18 numbers on a single-zero wheel and 18 numbers on a double-zero wheel. The zeros are the reason it is not a true coin flip.

The zero is the whole story. On a European single-zero wheel there are 37 numbers, so a red bet covers 18 winners and misses on 19 outcomes. Wizard of Odds lists the standard single-zero roulette house edge at 2.70%. On an American double-zero wheel there are 38 pockets, and the ordinary house edge rises to 5.26% on standard bets.
