Spain has moved the payment method into the identity check. Royal Decree 813/2026 requires licensed online gambling operators to verify that the person who owns the gaming account is also the person who owns each card, bank account or payment gateway used to deposit or withdraw.
The decree was published in the Official State Gazette on 8 October. iGaming Business reports that the new anti-money-laundering requirement took effect on 28 October, with a six-month transition for existing accounts. New accounts face the check immediately; existing customers have until 28 April 2027 to complete it.

A verified profile used to answer one question: who is the customer? The new rule adds another: who controls the money moving in and out? That matters when a player deposits with somebody else’s card, uses a shared bank account or changes payment methods without updating the operator.
The stated purpose is to reduce impersonation and payment misuse. EFE reported that complaints about identity impersonation rose 12% in 2025 to 8,675. The rule does not make every payment problem disappear, but it gives operators a clearer record to check before a transaction is accepted.
TopGamb’s KYC guide explains why an operator may ask for identity and source-of-funds evidence. The practical point is to use a payment method in your own name and keep the account details consistent from the first deposit.
Existing players may continue to deposit and play during the transition, but iGaming Business says an account cannot withdraw winnings until the payment-holder match is complete. That makes the deadline more than an administrative reminder. A player who waits until a large balance is sitting in the account may discover that the cashier is paused while documents are reviewed.
If the match is not verified by 28 April 2027, the operator must close the account, notify Spain’s gambling regulator and return the full balance, including any winnings that were being withheld, according to the reported rules. Players should still read the operator’s exact procedure and keep copies of every request and response.
Use the cashier test and first-withdrawal checklist before building a balance. A small, legitimate test can expose a name mismatch while the account is still easy to understand.
TopGamb’s legal-status guide and loss-limit explainer belong beside the payment check. A compliant cashier is useful, but it is not a reason to increase a deposit or keep playing past a planned budget.
Responsible gambling note: a verification deadline is not a gambling deadline. Keep deposits inside a fixed entertainment budget, and use a time-out or local support service if a blocked withdrawal makes you feel pressured to keep depositing.
It applies immediately to new accounts. Existing accounts have a reported transition deadline of 28 April 2027.
According to the reported implementation, existing players can deposit and play while adapting, but withdrawals are blocked until the payment-holder match is complete.
